Community Discussion: Rules, Goals, and Other Fun Stuff

Hello! This is the new, shiny-smelling community for discussing srs bsns issues in fakenews fandom. However, aside from it existing with a vague sense of purpose, there's not really a clear idea of what's going on here.

So that is where you (the People) come in. What would everyone like to get out of this community? What sort of rules would we like (I have made some up for the profile, but they are very tentative)? Would anyone like to suggest a layout, or even better, make a pretty header? Anyone want to mod with me? Other thoughts?

One possibility to kick off discussion is to have weekly posts to talk about the week's shows. The logical day for that is Friday, but I'm aware that some people have social lives that might not work best for this, so if anyone has suggestions, share them!

And lastly, advertise this place to anyone who might be interested so we can get a community going!

Weekly posts sound like a good idea, at least to get things moving. Maybe Monday would be better than Friday, though, because people could discuss the shows shortly after they aired, thus meaning the show would be fresh in everyone's minds -- and it would also give people the option of catching up with the shows & discussion on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Of course, since not everyone is able to watch the shows when they first air, that brings up the issue of spoilers, and how people feel they should be handled.

ETA: It might be helpful to link to dw_codesharing either in an intro post or the profile, in case people who are currently LJ-based want to create an account to participate.

I like the Monday idea too, so that it's an ongoing discussion instead of a recap. What's the spoiler policy over at the mothercomm? I think we're generally pretty relaxed about it in this fandom, given that there isn't a plot to follow or anything. Maybe just post a general spoiler warning and leave it at that?

Also, I suggest that you edit the comm info to include a link to something that explains what we mean by wanting to create a safe space that's relatively free of un-PC language. I have no idea what it would be, but I'm sure there's some sort of basic "here's what not to say if you're new" post or FAQ already out there. You don't have to, but it would give us something to point confused and/or irritated newcomers towards. I'll look around if you're interested.

Yeah, some sort of primer about being a safe space sounds like a good idea. I'm looking through the metafandom bookmark tags for prejudice, safe spaces, and privilege right now, but nothing has jumped out at me as being exactly what's needed. The closest I've found so far is List: Racism 101 which is, as the name suggests, a list of links about racism and privilege and being an ally, and I think a lot of the ideas contained in the linked posts can be applied to many or most -isms.

scans_daily put together a pretty kick ass list of resources you might want to steal with credit from.

It might be a good idea to start with a roundup of whatever critique you can find of the shows. Like this and this.

Also, how about instead of starting off with a list of criticisms, we post, say, one a week? (lol, "we". I mean our dear mod, obviously, and any of us who want to dig up links for them.) Or maybe find one clip from the archives a week to get the discussion started on Monday before the shows come out or on Friday while we're waiting around, trying to fill the meaningless void in our lives before they come back. It could be a clip that made us cringe from racefail, or maybe one of Jon's epic wins regarding gay rights. That way we could work our way through all sorts of old stuff as well as the new.

Ok, I swear to God I will shut up soon, but here's a link for you. Someone from the Freedom From Religion Foundation talking about the way the interview and editing process work over at TDS. We should start with a poll. Everyone likes polls! It could be a community demographics poll or a "what's your favorite/least favorite thing about the shows" poll or even a poll on which option would be better for structuring the comm. (Kind of) anonymous community input FTW!

It's really not that hard. LJ has a little form and everything. Even I figured it out once! :P
